Here are some of the top spreadsheet trends we're seeing for 2024.
1. Automation Tools 🤖 : Spreadsheets are becoming increasingly automated, with the rise of tools that allow users to build custom workflows and streamline repetitive tasks
Example company: Zapier
2. "Mouse-less" Productivity Tools ⏩ : Excel has long dominated this game with powerful shortcuts that voided the need for a mouse, but new Chrome extensions that bring Excel functionality to Sheets (e.g., formatting shortcuts, trace precedents, number / color cycling) have contributed to "going mouse-less" in Sheets as well. In addition, Google Sheets has been stepping up its own tooling, including Google Sheets Macros and a new Sheets UI that rolled out in March
Example company: SheetWhiz ✅
3. To move or not to move off Excel / Sheets? More purpose-built solutions have sprung up to replace Excel and Sheets while other solutions have sprung up aiming to build on top of Excel and Sheets. We've not seen a clear winning approach as you tend to lose some flexibility moving to a more purpose-built solution in exchange for greater efficiency and more powerful analytics out of the box. Likely depends on company size and needs (and how "Normalized" / "Adjusted" your metrics are 🤔 )
Example company taking you off of Excel / Sheets: Mosaic
Example companies building on top of Excel / Sheets: Cube, Vena Solutions
4. Artificial intelligence and machine learning 🤖: AI and machine learning are starting to make their way into spreadsheet software, with tools that can analyze data and make predictions based on historical trends
Example Company: Arcwise
5. Integration with other software 🤝 : Data needed for analysis can come from multiple places - Salesforce, Metabase, NetSuite, etc.. Since spreadsheets are where much of the analysis is done, startups have begun building integrations with other software tool in order to pull and refresh data faster
Example Company: Coefficient
6. CSVs are forever (so we need to make them better) 📈: Whether it's to consolidate and port all your crypto transactions into TurboTax or to transfer your SKUs from one siloed marketplace to another, the importance of the CSV remains as robust as ever. Startups are beginning to build tools to streamline the CSV download / upload process so you don't get stuck wondering why your CSV won't upload your data correctly
Example company: OneSchema
7. Data visualization 🖼 : With a growing emphasis on making data-driven decisions comes a growing emphasis on data visualization in spreadsheets. New tools that allow users to create charts, graphs, and other visualizations have sprung up to help decision-makers analyze their data more effectively
Example Company: Pigment
